Why I Started My Business in College

Our website has taken a little bit of a turn so I wanted to come on here and talk about why I chose to do start my own business. This isn't going to be a how-to just yet because I'm just starting out and I want to learn a bit more before I start teaching. That being said I hope that after reading this you get inspired!

Let's get started!

This is something I've always wanted to do. I know I've always wanted to be my own boss and take control of my life at an early age. I am 24, so it's not as impressive as an 18-year-old business owner but I think I'm finally at a place in my life where I'm confident in my ability to do my best work and successfully run my business!

Now that being said I'm a true Gemini and let me also say we're not all too faced lol. I don't want to get into the hate we all get that only my fellow gems will understand, but it's understood that we love change and can change our minds every day if presented with new information.

I had so many passions growing up and I've changed my major so many times my parents' blood pressure is probably through the roof. I've gone between law, curation, and now I've landed on graphic design and social media management. I don't think this will ever change! It wasn't until my junior year in college that I even knew social media managers existed. I took a PR class and learned about the business of social media and absolutely fell in love.

I have always loved graphic design but I really found my passion when I did more research on youtube. I started learning how to make posts on social media and what goes into marketing and I couldn't get enough. At the end of my junior year, I changed my major from Art Management (museum curation) to Design Management (graphic design & marketing). It was 3 am on the night before registration and even though I knew it would set me back a couple of credits I thought it was the only thing I wanted to do.

I'm now in my second to last semester and I started my blog at the beginning of this year. This was the first step. I got to design my website, which let me tell you I've completely redesigned multiple times over the last few months and loved every second. I got to figure out the best way to market myself on social media and see what works with my personal branding.

It's all about trial and error. I've learned what works for me and now that I've been designing my own brand I wanted to take a crack at being a social media manager and I, somehow with no professional experience in the field, I landed my first job. Now that I've gotten into the field I wanted to branch out and start building a client base and that's exactly what I've done. I couldn't be happier that it's worked out this far. I have a vision for the future and I'm going to make it happen.

In my next post, I'm going to explain how I got my first job as a social media manager, what skills I have and don't have, and hopefully, I inspire you to take the leap into this amazing field of social media.

Until next time.
